Self Promos 5 & 6

These are my last two self promos of the semester. The top is an ad for life cereal. My brother's friend came up with the original idea, I refined it and took the picture. "Give Someone life." The model is Tim, a first year at RCC. Very patient and good at playing dead.

On the second image, I wanted to try to do something that was more fine art than commercial. It's a close up of part of the body, don't worry it's not an inappropriate area. It's definitely not what I normally do, but I wanted to try and get out of my comfort zone a little bit.

Composite

This is an assignment were we had to take a portrait of someone, and  a separate background image and put them together to make one image. I worked with the lovely Shana Jarrett, and this is what I ended up with, plus one 'cause we were having fun.

Fuze!

We had another copy assignment for class today, but this time we got to work in groups, and it had to be a beverage. I got to work with the wonderful Emma Kepley. Very talented. We chose to copy a Fuze ad. Had a few problems in the beginning, but we got though and we're pretty pleased with the overall result.

Eggs!

For this client assignment we had to illustrate 12 eggs. I chose to put it into a kitchen setting, like you're about to bake a cake.

Copying an Ad

For one of our assignments we had to re produce an ad that we found either online or in a magazine. I chose one from a magazine and had to take a quick picture of it, so the one on the left isn't the best quality, but that's what I was copying.

Self promo 3 & 4

For our next self promos, I wanted to try and work with a person. The idea was basically a glamour / beauty shot. The expression isn't quite there yet, but I feel it was a good start. For the other promo I wanted to work with smoke. I bounced around a lot on how I wanted to do it, and I ended up on a product type shot of incense.

Pick Pocket Polly Pocket

For one of our assignments we had to make a time lapse, or stop motion, video. I used Polly Pocket dolls as the females, hence the name. Sort of a Damsel in distress situation. Click here to see the video :)

Interior

For one of our client assignments we had to find a living space and photograph it.

Planet Panorama

In class today we were assigned to take a panorama and then make it into a little world. This is something that I found a few years back, but never figured out how to do, which is a little sad, because it's actually really easy. Since it was my first try I went out onto my street and took a panorama just to keep it simple.

New Self Portrait

One of the first assignments we were given in my digital class was to shoot a self portrait of ourselves. I decided to re do it, and try to show some more of my personality in the process.

Self Promo 1 & 2

For our first self promo assignments I decided to shoot some food. For the oil and balsamic vinegar, I wanted to be warm and look more sophisticated. For the Jello I wanted it to look bright and "happy."

Ducks!

Adorable ducklings at my grandparent's condo.

Mmmm Beets!

Officially a second year commercial student! Our first client assignment was to shoot vegetables. It was pretty open as to how we could interpret it, and how we wanted to shoot it. I decided to shoot beets. They're such an odd color and have a great pattern on them when you cut them open. I wanted to emphasize the rings inside of them.

Dragonflies

Finally on vacation! I'm currently staying at my grandparents condo in Boyne City, MI. I was hanging out on the end of the dock with some family, when we realized there was a dragonfly eating another dragonfly. Pretty gross.

Something New

For the portfolio for John I decided to try something new, and this is some of what I came up with.

Sushi!

This was for our large format table top assignment. Unfortunately, I forgot the sushi in the fridge and it was going bad, so I didn't get to eat it.

Summer's Harvest

When I lived up in Indiana, there was a saying about corn, "knee high by fourth of July." The corn was almost never taller than that. The corn in this image was as tall as me or taller. Very strange.

Grede

For our industry assignment I shot at Grede in Biscoe NC.

Grede Family Picnic

My dad's company had their first family picnic this last weekend. Around 2,000 people attended, so I figured I might be able to get some pictures. It was about 100 degrees out, but it was pretty fun.

St. Julian Catholic Church

This is a digital image of St. Julian Catholic Church, the building I'm using for my large format architecture assignment. It took my mom telling me, about 30 minutes of trying to fix it, that some of the walls aren't straight. They merge in as the get to the top of the building. Slightly frustrating, but I got it.

America!

This is Phil, from the fourth of July game at the copperhead stadium. I feel he represents America pretty good.

New River Gorge

Went to a family reunion in West Virginia this last weekend. On the way we stopped at the New River Gorge. Hopefully I got something to use for portfolio.

Bokeh

Bokeh is a Japanese term for the aesthetic quality of the out of focus areas in an image. I used the flowers/grass as my Bokeh.

We Were Framed!

Yeah, I know... Cheesy title. What's life if you can't keep it fun, right?

The top was for our framing assignment. This was the first one that I turned in, but because of its lack of a person, and the same problem with many others, we were able to reshoot to get a better grade.

The bottom is the final image that I ended up turning in. I think it works a lot better than Taz, even though he's adorable.

Haw River

For our blog assignment this week we got to choose what we wanted to shoot. I went over to the Haw River and decided to put these together.

Available Light

For my basic product lighting class, we had to shoot an object using only available light. I chose this body wash bottle from Caress. Don't worry, the Shea Butter and the brown sugar tie in. That's the "flavor" of the body wash.

Painting with Light

Our weekly assignment in Small Format this past week was "painting with light." The above is basically me jumping around like crazy with a flashlight, and it's the one that I turned in. Definitely one of the funnest assignment that we've had so far.

That is a long sparkler that was bent and attached to an electric drill. It took a little bit of practice to be able to hold it still, but I think it looks pretty cool.

Childhood Angst

This was our parks and recreations assignment. I went to one of the parks in Asheboro, and found this little girl swinging. She was getting pretty tired, and I think she was a little upset about her grandmother giving me permission to photograph her. She was adorable tho.

Now I Know my ABCs Part II

After the first ABC assignment our instructor kicked it up a notch. We had to find objects that looked like each letter of the alphabet. It was a little crazy when I first started looking for the letters. After a little while tho, it's hard to look at an ordinary object and not form a letter out of it. My dad tried to convince me to do the Greek Alphabet. Not yet.

On the Road Again

Taking pictures of roads isn't exactly all that exciting, but we found a way to make it fun.

All American

Today in our product lighting class, we were given an aluminum can and told to go photograph it. I was in a group of three and the can we got was Diet Coke. Putting the hot dog with it was Skyler Brown's idea, and I think it turned out very well. What's more American than Coke and a hot dog?

Now I know my ABCs

For our lab today the assignment was to go out and photograph all of the letters of the alphabet. We were given about two and a half hours to get the images taken and get back to class to learn how to put them together. It was a little nerve-racking at first, but, once you really look around and notice all of the signs, it only took about an hour which including driving time. While I was downtown I ran into an old RCC student who immediately said, "You're in John Rash's class, aren't you?" It was a little weird but comforting that he understood why I was taking pictures of signs.

Bath Time

Hanging out outside with the cats. Taz ran through a bunch of bushes and got burs all over him.

Stranger

For our first weekly assignment for Jay, we had to photograph a stranger and try to get expression in the eyes. The first is Laymen, taken in downtown Greensboro. The second is James, taken in downtown Asheboro.

Silly Kitty

This is a negative scanned into the computer from my portfolio last semester. His name is Taz and he's my baby. It took me a little while to get him to sit still. Every time the mirror popped up in my camera he would freak out a little. I ended up having to snap continuously to give him something to focus on.

Crazy Business

This was an assignment where we had to shoot a self portrait with no assistance from another person. We had to set a self timer on the camera and get into position. It was a little crazy, and I kept getting weird looks from my neighbor. I even got bit by a tick in the process.
